Precept 1: To Face the Past
Greetings Friends,
Happy Chinese New Year…
Last night at midnight, I could hear the sounds of fireworks going off in celebration, and I remembered that it was the Chinese New Year. I recall many years ago receiving a special invitation from a Zazen Monk to participate in welcoming the blessings of the Chinese New Year. On the evening of the Chinese New Year's Eve we attended a Buddhist temple, where we enjoyed some delicious food. Afterwards, we took part in a service to bring in the New Year in reverence and gratitude. If I remember correctly, that particular year was the Year of the Snake.
This year is also the year of the Snake, which invites us to shed old ideas, habits lettng go of the old, renewal, transformation, wisdom, personal growth, changes in conciousness, major life changes and welcoming new oppurnities.
Tuning in to the year of the Snake for me also means its a time for healing, embracing facing the past and reflecting on the things that are continually holding us back from our true potential and positive transformation in the world.
I've been thinking a lot about the RYV Values & Ethics, especially Ananda's 12 Precepts by Swami Kriyananda. I have considered changing and editing them, but every time I try, I feel in my being and heart that they are perfect just as they are.
This month, I noticed how strong the coincidence was wiith “Precept 1 to face the past” for me and for many of our dear friends who are part of both Reclaiming Your Virginity and Sushumna Chapel, in more ways than one. It sparked in us to reflect and connect in meaningful ways. We chose to creatively engage with the precepts monthly to see what unfolds for us together. Below are our unique expressions of poetry and art. If you feel inspired to join us each month to share, express your thoughts, feelings, through art, words and poetry feel free to reach out to me.
Here are the Ananda’s 12 precepts
to face the past; (January)
to relinquish attachments; (February)
to accept past errors without regret as simple facts, trying to see that it was God, through their imperfect understanding, who did it all; (March)
to release the grip of ego-consciousness; (April)
to release, one by one, every desire and attachment into the Supreme Bliss; (May)
to offer every regret into God’s love and Infinite Consciousness; (June)
to forgive past hurts and betrayals; (July)
to give out universal love to everyone, even to so-called enemies; (August)
to help them see that everyone is motivated, however misguidedly, by the same soul-craving for Satchidananda; (September)
to concentrate on infinity; (October)
to practice devotion; (November)
to learn to overcome fear by realizing that we are not this body. (December)
